After breakfast at M**s, we cruised by Smiley's Pond, where Canada geese were gathering as flight after flight landed on the pond. Each flight was greeted by those already there with much honking and wing flapping. Descending in circling glides, the flights would ease down, slowing at the last minute with webbed feet skimming the surface before splashing down.
Along the far shore, a Great Blue Heron and a Common Egret vied for their hunting space among red-headed female Common Mergansers, which also hunt small fish. As we watched, the heron would turn and force the egret to back away from its spot, only to have the egret sneak up on it as soon as it resumed hunting.
