Yesterday morning, along with the cardinal posted earlier, came this female downy woodpecker, who seemed to swallow her sunflower hearts whole as she clung to the feeder hole rather than its peg and used her stiff tail feathers to prop herself just so.
The heavy traffic at the feeder despite a hawk in a nearby tree perhaps was our leading indicator for this morning's one-inch snowfall, which has covered lawns and roads for the first time this season. With our customary flurries before 11 November and now with our first coating of snow before Thanksgiving, we appear to be on schedule.We look forward to a fun holiday week, with our traditional feast with nearby friends, literally over the river and through the woods from our cottage. This week we also have visitors from Cape Cod, who will fill out the week with festivities.
