A cold morning with heavy snow down New Jersey way but not a flake here brought hungry birds to our feeder despite the presence of a large hawk in the trees just beyond the back lawn's edge. The many birds showed much nervousness and often stopped their breakfast to keep an eye on the hawk, who eats no seeds.
This watchful cardinal paused just long enough to grab a seed or two from the feeder's tray as he kept a wary eye on the sky.
