The American goldfinch may be the most common bird to overwinter at our feeder. Having surrendered his bright gold summer feathers for winter plumage, his kind gathers to bicker over place among the hungry flock.
From time to time a solitary nuthatch will dash in for a seed or two, only to dash away from the bother of all those goldfinches. Rather than eat at the feeder as the golds do, the nuthatch will take his seed to a nearby snug cranny where he'll quickly peck it to bits more easily swallowed.
