Frederick Edwin Church (1826-1900), mentored by Thomas Cole, represented perhaps the high point of the Hudson River School of landscape painting, a subtle combination of river haze, mountain sunsets, and rural civilization, then. Church built an exotic home above the Hudson River as a working farm and studio, from where he painted famous scenes, including one digitally updated by this recent photograph, looking south along the river. We took Cape Cod friends here, above the Rip Van Wrinkle Bridge and the town of Catskill, east of the the Catskill (Kaatskill) range beyond, to Church's landmark home, Olana, Church's "center of the world."
