Summer's End?

While we await tomorrow morning's recorded low temperature here at our cottage, frost may be on the pumpkin tonight, as both pumpkins and descending cold air will be present early Monday morning.
Neither early nor late, this frost, should it come, will provide the demarcation for summer and Indian summer, that relatively warm one or two weeks of summer-like weather following a wide-spread frost.
This is why we did not retire "south." The palpable change of the seasons every three or four months, the preparations for the coming change. For example, retiring the lawn mower, raking leaves, watching vanilla ice cream melt onto a slice of piping-hot apple pie....
