Early Fall?

Here in western Mass we say that first frost comes any time after Labor Day, and winter any time after that. Indeed, the worst snowfall we've experienced fell 4 October 1987. With most of the leaves still on the trees, the heavy, wet snow bent even large oaks until they snapped with reports like canon firing. In remote areas here, phones and power were out for about a week. On the other side of winter, the second worst snow storm in our experience was 9 May, back in the 1970s.
We don't know if the 20-year anniversary of that October storm heralds a repeat of tedious chain sawing and snow plowing, but Accuweather today predicts an early chill, even a freeze, for later this week.
If their indication for an early autumn comes to pass, I guess I better tune up my saw.
