One small part of a local pond had not frozen and seemed crowded with Canada geese, even to the point that many were sleeping on one foot on the ice edge. We pulled over to watch as a flight of six or so sailed in at stall speed and noisily joined the others. Then, over the far trees came flight after flight of still more geese. For perhaps a half hour we watched the seemingly crowded open spot fill to the edges with perhaps a thousand of the big birds, who with loud honks and much flapping of wings elbowed their way into the growing raft.
