In 1957 our parents mixed business with pleasure and took all four children to Europe (see my October Europe 1957 post below), where we were treated to many city and country sights between Shannon, Ireland, and Austria. The above photo shows my youngest sister and I back in summer 1957 at the Gornergrat station looking higher still over 11 kilometers to Switzerland's 4,063-meter Gabelhorn after the ride up on the famous Gornergrat cog train out of Zermatt, which lies on the valley floor below that distant diagonal glacial river. The 4,478-meter Matterhorn is out of the photo behind us.
Part of retirement fun is to juxtapose an old photo with a new one, which comes to our computer at our bidding via the Internet and a rotating Gornergrat webcam. Careful study shows the old photo's peaks and largely unchanged glaciers now dressed in late fall snows, which have been abundant in the Alps this year, permitting many resorts to open up to a month early this skiing season. The ridge and glacial river just to the right of my shoulder is center-left of the current photo above, under much more snow. The peak above my head is the leftmost peak in the second photo.
