A Tale of Tails

In 1979 we introduced our children to a portion of Europe. On our way from Lugano, Switzerland to southern Austria, we drove down to Pisa and toured the Leaning Tower, the Hall of Kings, and the Baptistry, which took 200 years to build and was completed in 1363. When we entered the Baptistry a mellow-voiced tour guide was just finishing his harmonic demonstration of the acoustics, which were designed into the structure to augment church chants. Standing in the central pulpit, the proud guide sang three long notes in succession, then paused as all three chants reverberated from dome to floor for some seconds. A shower of small coins was his reward.
After his demonstration, a modern young lady entered and walked up to the pulpit while reading her guide book. MLH smiled up at me, walked up beside the girl, and posed for this snapshot.
Within a minute, a uniformed guide appeared and sternly scolded the girl for her unharmonious attire. She strode away into the crowd, Italian style, and the guide shrugged in frustration and returned to his post.
