Swiss Independence

The 1848 Swiss Constitution was influenced by the US Constitution and provided for cantonal sovereignty that could not supersede the Swiss Federal Constitution. Created in response to a 27-day civil war in Switzerland, the Sonderbundskrieg, on 1 January 2000 the Constitution was amended to incorporate nine fundamental rights previously unmentioned.
In addition to a referendum, the Swiss Constitution provides for seven members of the executive branch, who rotate the presidency and vice presidency yearly. Perhaps the wisdom of seven heads of state provides a governance platform that could improve our own.
The Swiss recognized the importance of the American Revolution in their own republic by placing a statue of George Washington in a prominent spot in downtown Lugano. From the expansive lake front plaza on 1 August, the Swiss national day, Georgio Washinton is treated to great evening bonfires by the dozens on the many surrounding mountain tops as the Swiss celebrate their federation.
