A rattle and thump penetrated my concentration, causing me to look into the dining room, where through the sliding glass door I saw this 20-inch-tall Coopers Hawk sitting on the deck rail near our bird feeder. Clearly frustrated, this Accipiter (bird hawk) was hopping between the rail, a chair, and the farther railing as it searched in vain for a feathered lunch. Its habit of preying upon smaller birds frequenting bird feeders reminded me why we refer to our feeder as a hawk feeder.

Hawk Feeder
