Coastal route A1A runs seaward of Route 1 and I95 and the ICW, passing alternately among 1950s beach houses and then behind massive modern seaside hotels and condos. Between St. Augustine Beach and Flagler Beach to the south, two non-toll roads cross the ICW, to some degree insulating the coastal islands and barrier dunes from the daily grind.
Flagler Beach mostly has retained the look and feel of 1950s tourism, with its famous fishing pier, quiet beach, and adjacent modest shops and restaurants.
Suited surfers attempt the waves, watched from the boardwalk by a steady stream of onlookers who park to stroll the walk or simply sit and gaze over the waves and out to sea, hoping to catch a view of whales or the more plentiful porpoise cruising for a meal of fish or squid.
Near the pier, where route 100 crosses the ICW, a local hangout sports a restaurant downstairs and an open bar and lounge upstairs, complete with a mockup scene from the Blues Brothers. The drinks and sunsets are great.
