On our way to breakfast at M..., we noticed two cars and several persons with tripod-mounted telescopes peering onto Smiley's Pond at this large flock of Canada Geese, so on our return we stopped to see what all the fuss was about, only to find geese galore (click to enlarge). As February progresses and the sun angle mounts, our streams and ponds respond with open water adjacent to incoming streams, which then attract those who depend upon their long necks to reach down to now abundant underwater plants growing undisturbed in the stream beds since the ice closed the pond. A quick estimate suggests that some 300 geese welcome the bounty uncovered by the return of the sun over Smiley's Pond.
