This morning, the first day of winter, we again found our heron huddled in the same icy spot as yesterday, but this time accompanied by another one out of sight about 50 feet upstream under a bridge. When we stopped, the upstream heron squawked, seemingly waking this one (click to enlarge), which began to eye us warily as we snapped several shots. As we started away, it resumed its huddle.
