Driving up Route 41 toward Egremont this morning, we spotted perhaps a hundred turkey in the corner of a roadside lot. We stopped and watched, listening to their chirping and clucking as they seemed to discuss what they might do next. For a bit, some pecked at the ground, others flapped their wings, and the rest just seemed to be waiting for something. The flock was stretched out, angling away from the corner of the lot. Suddenly, a big one near the corner jumped up and flew off across the road. Before it had cleared the fence, the rest took off in pursuit, all of them headed in a rush to a pine forest perhaps 200 yards away to the east. We have never seen so many turkey in one place at one time, on the ground or in flight.
