Over the summer we have chronicled here a pair of great blue herons raising two young. Recently, we spotted six or seven common egret in a tree over on Mill Pond. Wherever we walked, from time to time we spotted an egret, or an heron, stalking its lunch in a pond, oxbow, or river. However, we never saw them together, or even two egrets or heron within squawking distance of each other.
Imagine our surprise when we spotted this cutoff oxbow and its shrinking pool shared by seven egret and eight blue heron, all of whom took flight when I interrupted their generational seminar on how to catch fish in a barrel.
