We seem to have an abundance of heron this year, as this blog has chronicled, from nest building to fledging. (Click on the Blue Heron label at lower right.) Almost every pond, stream, oxbow, and river seems to have one or two of these big birds decorating the changing scenery and sharing it with migrating water fowl, such as diverse ducks and Canada geese.
As fall sets in, pond vegetation responds, with the swamp maples ablaze and cattails browning and dissolving into fluff on chill winds. Whereas in spring and summer local ponds sported a yellow flower on the lily pads, we now find a surge of more familiar white blossoms.
