The first day of September sparkles, with cool air, deep blue sky, and M's wildflower garden attempting to catch up after a very cool and wet summer. This small sunflower with its leaves reflecting the sky and its roots in saturated soils stands about three feet high, while its cousin on high ground by the cottage approaches eight feet and its seed head holds perhaps a pound of seed.
The backlit cosmos also grows on high ground, where it has grown a blossom more than twice the diameter of its cousin in the wildflower garden.Still, the next week or so promises to be sunny, the other essential ingredient for wildflowers, besides rain.
