The heron chicks 40 feet above their beaver pond grow fast. Today we watched them jostle each other in the nest, perch on its rim, and even flutter their wings, which look stumpy at this stage of their development. Yellow down has begun to show faint heron markings and patters as their feathers begin to grow.
Life teems around them at a lower elevation, as well. The family of five pileated woodpeckers has dispersed into nearby trees, and families of red-winged blackbirds, grackles, yellowthroat warblers, and kingfishers (juvenile above) work the pond for their respective favorite foods.
