Progress continues among the heron, as parents feed increasingly noisy chicks. A returning parent soars in over the tree tops, grunting as it comes to alert the chicks, who rear up in anticipation of another meal. After landing, the parent quickly regurgitates into the nest and then steps aside as the chicks jostle each other and gobble down the bits.
We watch for about an hour at a time, also noting the abundant bird life in this beaver pond. Common yellowthroat, cedar waxwing, pileated woodpecker, kingfisher, red-wing blackbird, boat-tailed grackles, yellow warbler, yellow-bellied sapsucker, and this scarlet tanager and his family.
