While mowing our lawn today, we spied this toad eating ants crawling along our retaining wall. When we approached him, he jumped straight up and landed right were he started, perhaps attempting to startle us. We checked on him again a few hours later and found him burrowing backwards into soft earth at the base of the wall.The photo shows his nostril, oval pupil, and ear drum disk near his eye, and his toxic glands on his head. He has few predators because his glands make him taste bad.
He eats about any invertebrate that will fit down his wide throat, and spends sunny days hiding under things. Reportedly, they make good pets, but our pet fancy stops well short of toads. And M wouldn't let me keep him, anyway.
