Update 2: Blue Heron

This morning's drive past the nesting heron on the beaver pond at first showed only her head above the nest. However, she soon gave a squawk, as if something had startled her, and leaped from her nest, only to resettle, gently lowering herself onto her eggs.
A freeze warning for tomorrow morning (1 June!) has been issued for upstate New York, and a scattered frost warning for the Berkshires. The advancing cold, clear air prompted us to walk across the Sheffield Covered Bridge toward Boardman Street, where in a river meander we surprised another heron that had been fishing, perhaps for its mate less than two miles away (as the heron flies) over on the beaver pond.
