Painted Turtle

After a leisurely breakfast at Mom's, we turned down Route 41 past Smiley's Pond where we saw this painted turtle in the middle of the road, a hazardous place for a slow and steady turtle amidst an almost constant stream of cars, pickups, and light trucks. We pulled over, turned on our flashers, and in a lull of traffic saved this one from a certain imminent thinness. As M held it, the camera caught the reason for its name. We carefully placed it on the pond side of the road, the direction it had been heading, and where it quickly scrambled toward the water's edge.
