Red-Shouldered Hawk

Thom in Florida sent the above photo of a red-shouldered hawk hunting from a nearby tree. Common in eastern North America and on the west coast, the medium-sized hawks sport wing spans in excess of three feet and hunt small amphibians, rodents, snakes, lizards, and insects. Some hunt small birds at bird feeders. This photo clearly shows the red shoulder feathers. Mostly permanent residents in their ranges, they and their eggs in turn are prey for a variety of hungry animals ranging from raccoons to owls and bigger hawks.
