Examining the underside of milkweed leaves shows how diverse meadow fauna depend upon them (see both Meadow Meanders below). While searching for Monarch butterfly eggs, I disturbed this small, translucent-green spider in the process of coating the darker side of the leaf with its web. Poised to fight or flee, one can just make out four of its many eyes as it gauges the threat to its undertakings. With apologies to poets everywhere, we append a short rhyme jotted down long ago as a larger orb-weaver spider spun its evening web in our doorway:
With thought and plan This snare was woven,
So fine the design, so prudently roven.
Centered, poised, single-minded in project,
Each limb and sinew felt the blundering object.
Diving, not dodging, heedless of care,
Gathered so quickly, placed back in the lair.
Hopeless the wanderer, errant in flight,
Enshrouded, bound tightly, for supper tonight!
