One of my hobbies is to return to a spot that I had photographed long ago, retake the photo, and then compare the two and note what change may have occurred. For example, these two photos show one of our favorite places on earth, Lugano, Switzerland, which I first visited as a child in 1957, and have returned to many times since. The first photo was taken in October 1973.A friend in Lugano retook my photo for me a few days ago.
Both photos show similar shots of the lake-front fountain at the Paradiso-Lugano border and much of 912-meter-high San Salvatore to the west behind. At first glance one notes the big, new hotels in the center, and the growth of the foundation and palm plantings. A closer look shows just one remaining tower on the mountain, and refurbished signs and street lights. The full photos show more subtle changes.
The road uphill behind the car leads through some 20 switchbacks up the mountain and along its ridge through several southen Swiss communities, all subjects for future posts. On a very clear day from the observation tower on top of San Salvatore one can see south in the northern Italian plains almost to Milan, west to the snowy Matterhorn and Mte Rosa near France, and east to mountains beyond Lake Como in Italy.
