Our son-in-law acquired a pontoon boat earlier this summer, the better to build family memories and entertain friends and their families. Yesterday's cruise on one of western Connecticut's lakes carried eight adults and five children under the age of 12. Even the five-year-old spent most of the time in the water, or on a towed raft bouncing in our wake as we powered our way around the lake noting differences in the realization of the American dream for a home on a lake.While these two homes differ greatly, that glimpse may not offer a reliable measure of the owners' relative wealth or social standing; rather, each home may reflect a large difference in each owner's ideal for a home on a lake. Or perhaps not.
