Strong northwest winds and falling temperatures assisted our four-hour drive east to visit friends on Cape Cod. The next morning under a bright, cold sun and battering wind we toured some of the Cape's beaches and vistas, beginning at Chatham at the Cape's elbow. From the viewing point above the Chatham Break, made some years ago by a hurricane, we watched clouds of blowing sand abrade a lone beach stroller.
(Click any photo to enlarge.)Further north up the Atlantic side, we paused at Nauset Beach, where the bitter cold and onshore winds were building ice along the seashore as far as we could see. We could not stay for more than a few minutes before fingers and ears went numb.
As we drove off the beach, we noticed a car stuck in a small sand dune. Our host said that by February the beach roads would be mostly buried in sand from the strong winter winds.
Just a little further up the coast we found the Nauset Lighthouse, complete with a Christmas wreath strapped to the tower.
We spent much of the day poking our noses into various nooks and crannies on the Cape, cruising Ptown and Race Point, very much enjoying having all those sunny beaches completely to ourselves, if only briefly before we had to hurry back to the warmth of the car.
