Posted as Winter Beaver in December, an ambitious beaver attempted to fell this large soft maple tree, perhaps to harvest and store up the branches for winter in its underwater pantry, which it weights down with mud near the underwater entry to its lodge. Working at night, it chewed well into the tree trunk beyond the sapwood and stopped.
Now some three weeks later and after a solid freeze, the beaver is back at work, chewing deeper into the trunk over the past two nights or so. The 40-foot tree now stands perilously on perhaps six inches of heart wood, ready to topple under the next gust of winter wind.
