At 1F this morning, the temperature seems about right as we near mid January. Although we haven't had the definitive week below zero this year, neither have we had any thaw. Temperatures have remained below freezing for weeks. The consistent cold has added much ice to our rivers, even disabling the Housatonic River water level gauge up on Division Street. The chart at:http://waterdata.usgs.gov/ma/nwis/uv?01197500 shows the legend "flow at station affected by ice."
Some seven miles south of the Division Street station, where the river meanders on the Sheffield Plain just east of Route 7, ice spreads from bank to bank, having earlier made a high-water mark on the banks.
