A brief stop at the heron rookery over on Berkshire School Road showed that the single heron chick still in the nest is hot and panting as the August sun burns in a hazy sky. The bird parts its beak and fluffs its jowl skin to force air over its tongue. In the second photo, the fully feathered bird holds its wings away from its body, perhaps to improve air circulation over its chest and back.
As we watched, it deftly snatched several buzzing flies from the air, and then backed up to the edge of the nest where it evacuated down the side. The nest must be a rank place under the hot sun.
