Upon our return from family fun in California, we see that the heron nest has but one occupant, with just a bit of the top of its head visible. Scouting the beaver pond with binoculars, we found the second sibling standing in water trying to hunt and from time to time jumping up on fallen branches, only to wave its wings and fall off. We wonder if the grounded bird fell out of the nest. The bird in the nest appears sleepy, perhaps awaiting lunch delivery, which did not come during our watch.

The hour had its rewards, nonetheless. The time was filled with other activities: an adult female pileated woodpecker revisiting her feeding holes; a pair of green heron flitting between two ponds; and a horde of mosquitoes, the result of an unusually cool and very wet summer.
