Our New England climate has a reputation for weather extremes. For example, last January ninth I took the above photo of a blue heron skimming our local mill pond in search of lunch.As the photo below taken today near the same spot but with a different camera shows, no heron in its right mind would be fishing much north of perhaps the Chesapeake or Hudson. This morning brought -6.5F to thicken the ice beneath about a foot of snow cover. Only ice fishermen will be on the pond this January.
