Contrasts

Saint Patrick's Cathedral in New York City was begun far from the city center. Dedicated in 1879, its Gothic spires were finished in 1888. Originally intended to dominate a growing city, today, it is crowded by early 20th century businesses and overtopped by modern glass and steel structures for about as far as one can see in every direction.

The stark contrast of the three architectural styles in the photo speaks volumes to New York's history, the melting pot of humanity and its diverse ambitions, secular and religious.
