A few days ago we spotted a lone mute swan on Mill Pond, and wondered about the absence of others. Today we spotted five on the pond, serenely cruising amongst the Canada geese and sundry ducks. Though the binoculars, we think we saw a mom with her two one-year-olds, who stuck pretty close to mom, the pen. The other two seemed to us to be two males, or cobs, who gave each other a bit of room. We guess that they will soon leave for more northern parts to begin a family.
While watching the swans, a large bird swooped in from the north, exciting many of the ducks and geese, and getting the attention of the swans. As the bird turned back into the far shore line, we spotted its white head and tail, the confirmation of a bald eagle, just before it settled into a shoreline oak, where its bald head looked much like a misplaced golf ball.
