Yesterday we spotted two male bluebirds as we went about south county. One was on the corner of our cottage roof, from where he could monitor the back yard box. The other was on a knoll just north of Gt. Barrington, where it flew across our path from another box. This morning, another brilliant blue male flew ahead of us as we crossed the Appalachian Trail south of Egremont on route 41. M has been fostering the return of the eastern bluebird in this area since the early 1970s, and we enjoy the regular resumption of their activities with the approach of each spring.

For some years we have been admiring an early blooming witch hazel bush on the Egremont/Sheffield Road. Last year we found one of the right blossom shade and size at a Connecticut nursery and planted it in the lawn just off our local road. This morning under a weak sun our inspection shows its red blossoms right on schedule, despite several inches of snow and ice on the lawn.
