Since late May the sun has cruised its northernmost track without much deviation, providing long daylight hours and morning and evening lingering
twilights. That period of maximum summer
insolation has begun to shorten, however, and will become quite noticeable by mid-August when that track will have decreased by 10 degrees of latitude.
For sun watchers, that relatively rapid change begins the countdown for all frost-sensitive things, including cucumbers and tomatoes, those gardener's rewards. Here our gardens have just begun producing such delicacies, and we watch the sun's changes and urge our plants to greater efforts.
