Our Alpine touring and hiking over the past several weeks found diverse blossoms on native plants hurrying to catch up after a late spring. Such plants have adapted to the high, cool environment of a short spring. For example, the Alpine rhododendron stays close to the ground, and many common blossoms are smaller than their lowland versions. We managed to find peak spring flowering not far below melting snow banks in the gullies on greening peaks.
