The Wren

Perhaps a week ago a house wren took over an empty bluebird box on our lawn and stridently announced possession over several days from the roof top. Then it began ferrying small sticks and twigs, soon filling the box so that sticks poked out of any crack. Among the debris the wren has made a passage down to a pocket for the eggs.

Apparently the urge to cram sticks into the box exceeds the capacity of the box. As we watched, the feisty little bird attempted to insert one more stick. After several minutes of trying to push that stick in, it suddenly stopped, dropped the stick, and peered intently into the hole. Then it hopped up on top and announced its accomplishments to the tree tops.
