The sun set at 1602 hours EST yesterday, plunging our great room into cool shadow and foretelling another hard freeze by sunrise today. Indeed, we see 26F overnight on our recording thermometer.
In hope of seeing the Catskills with their tops in snow, we drove up the Taconic Parkway to a rest stop that offers a complete view of them, but found only a faint hint of snow on the ground under the trees on one center peak behind the eastern slopes. Winds must have swept the far branches clear of snow. (Click any photo to enlarge.)
On local back roads, we spotted much overnight beaver activity, perhaps spurred by the colder weather. These saplings have been taken by sensible beaver both for strengthening their dam and for filling up their pantry.
The tops of the saplings have been gathered into one place in their pond, which all too soon will be covered by thick ice. Over the winter, the beaver will frequent this pantry of submerged twigs for snacks. Their well-kept dam is visible in the upper right. They appear ready for winter.
