Deer shotgun season opened today, so our meander to Egremont for breakfast passed many pickup trucks tucked into various woods lanes off Bow Wow Road. The hunters no doubt had parked before first light in order to get to favorite stands out in the woods along deer trails and near browse spots. We shared a quick grin after we took the sharp right at Giberson, where these four sensible does and one buck [second from left, thanks to Hawkeye Randy L] watched us warily, and then crossed the road toward a farm after we passed. Perhaps they intend to hide among the relative safety of the farm animals. (Click photos to enlarge.)
Our recording thermometer showed an overnight low of 18F, and a thick frost covered the ground and most trees. At Smiley's Pond in Egremont, ice has almost closed the pond to geese, which come daily to dabble for pond greens, but today just stood about on the new ice, perhaps waiting for the sun to let them breakfast as well.
