A beautiful Berkshire day, slight haze, 60F at 2 p.m. Perfect weather for a walk along the Housatonic River, where stubble corn fields, crisp underfoot leaves, and a surprised blue heron provide a background for sparrows and juncos and grey squirrels scratching and chattering among the weeds. As I walk with my long shadow before me, a waft of deceptively warm air carries milkweed seeds along with me.
