Mr. Nuthatch

MLH provides lots of mealworms to her bluebirds as they raise up to three nestings of four to six eggs per seasonal effort. Already Berkshire area nests hold young bluebirds about to fledge. Here in southern Berkshire some nesting boxes have delivered their treasures to their futures.
Other bug-eating birds also prefer mealworms, as does this nuthatch, which also was feeding chicks, as shown by her ferrying of one or two worms at a time over a nearby sweet-smelling lilac hedge into brush beyond.
The pert nuthatch readily climbs up and down tree trunks in search of bugs on and under bark. This photo shows an outsized rear claw, presumably at least a partial explanation of the nuthatch's indifference to its orientation during its active predation of divers bugs.
