As posted earlier, local beaver abound, with hardly a creek, swale, or intermittent wet spot lacking these industrious rodents. They easily turn a 20-acre meadow into a swamp by damming the drainage ditches, then building a lodge right in the middle of the resulting bog.
They also build canals and then flood the canals to ease their efforts as they widen their wet spot, propelled along the canals by their large, webbed feet. They prefer canals so much that when they come to rising ground they will build a little dam in the canal and then excavate a canal further along the slope of their creek.
