Temple Oranges

Today's refreshment brings back many happy memories of sitting cross-legged on the living room floor among my siblings as we mimicked our father preparing and eating my favorite Florida orange, the temple, which is picked in late February and March. Only a few markets carry the temple, so in my youth our Florida grandparents sent a special box of select temples up each year.
Before a warm fire, and over tripled spreads of newspaper, we peeled, sectioned, bit out the seeds, and then slurped down the dripping sweet sections as sticky juice dripped off of our elbows onto the papers.
We continued this winter ceremony with our own children, and now, hopefully, they have initiated theirs to the sweet tang of juicy temples.
