While scouting a nearby field, we spotted our first American Kestrel of the year. Also known as a sparrow hawk, he perched in a pruned nursery tree while he studied the brown grass underneath, perhaps looking for a field mouse.
A common and quick hawk about as big as a jay, small size is no impediment to his predation on rodents and birds even as big as himself.
