Late February offers hope that January's sub-zero temperatures have been banished, as more daylight and a stronger sun
consolidate deep snows and thin pond ice. The local beaver take advantage of momentarily open water to groom their lodges with the remnants of their winter pantry and pond mud gathered from about the lodge and from the bottom of their many canals, most of which are still frozen over.
Despite the desolate look of this winter beaver pond, the fresh sticks and mud on this lodge show the unrelenting energy of our beaver as it begins its preparations for expanding its pond and increasing its family.
