Yellowstone Webcam

Over the past week or so, almost 300 earthquakes, an earthquake swarm, have rumbled through Yellowstone Lake, in Yellowstone National Park, itself a huge collapsed volcano that last erupted some 700,000 years ago as a supervolcano, some 1,000 times larger than the 1980 Mt. Saint Helens eruption. Yellowstone Lake lies in the deepest part of the caldera, where something again moves, perhaps due to shifting underlying magma.

Earthquake swarms are music to a vulcanologist's ears, which are attuned to magma flows. Does the recent activity warn of coming catastrophe? Stay tuned. In the meantime, the park's Old Faithful webcam shows both tourists and buffalo calmly enjoying the warmth of that reliable gyser.
