While helping friends with a heating job, we discovered a cow's skull, complete with horns, in the basement. Poking around among the basement joists, we found a soft spot in one beam and a complete mouse skeleton, which tumbled to the floor next to the cow skull as we poked. Hmmm. Both mammals, both vegetarians, but what a difference in size!
The cow grazes grasses, while the mouse mostly gnaws nuts and grains. And their hardware fits their style. Out in the open, the large cow's horns and sturdy skull provide protection against sundry meat eaters. Hiding in crevices, the tiny mouse has no cumbersome horns and a paper-thin brain case, but sports quick reflexes and sharp teeth specially adapted to self-sharpening and hard nuts.
